Summer 2017!

Now that I have finallyyyy finished the Ireland posts (again, apologies for the delay) I can focus on the rest of my amazing summer!

Here are some highlights and pictures to tide you over until my next post: ISRAEL!

Celebrated my birthday (again!) with my Texas friends in Uptown (while jet-lagged). We went to dinner in Dallas at The Social House. I got my dress for free from Rent the Runway (you know I love them) #notanadvertisement and I got to wear my new Loubs! I missed my friends so much while I was gone and wish they all could have visited me. Having Melissa and Brian, even for a week, really saved my spirit. Having friends is one of the best things about life and I wouldn’t trade mine for the world. They all mean so much to me and it was really amazing that they all came out to help me celebrate my special day (belated as it was).

Took my mom out for Mother’s Day to brunch in Denton at Barley and Board. We then went blackberry picking at this super cute farm, which didn’t have very many blackberries, but had AMAZING blackberry cobbler! If I can get the recipe I’ll post it on here. It was seriously soooo good!

Got in a small fender bender on the way to work 🙁 I was literally totally fine driving for THREE MONTHS IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY, but I am home less than a week and run into the back of another, smaller car. #angst

Had an afternoon of wine tasting at the Shops at Legacy with Melissa, Becca, and Scott. The Cru Wine Bar is now one of my favorite places to have a chill, but upscale afternoon. We tried so many different kinds of wine and snacked on two charcuterie boards. We of course had to also make a stop at Oil and Vinegar. I bought some amazing roasted garlic olive oil that I still need to pull out for a well-planned dinner. They always have great samples and the staff is very knowledgable about all of the products; how to pair them and how to use them creatively. If you’re ever near one of their outposts I highly recommend going in even if just for a small sample. 🙂 They also can do private parties and my friends have been talking about having one someday so maybe I’ll just have to make that happen this year!

Finally visited Magnolia Market in Waco with Julia! Unfortunately, we did not see Chip and Joanna, but I plan to return on a less busy day and hopefully catch a glimpse! #couplegoals

We also got to see some of the other landmarks around Waco that are regularly featured on the show such as the store and workshop for Harp Design Company, some of the renovated houses, and the coffeeshop, Common Grounds. There are also some copy-cat design stores that are near the Silos, which are way less crowded and have similar items. Obviously, I had to check those out as well. Julia and I got lunch at this awesome Greek place called Alpha Omega. I highly recommend it if you are looking to get lunch near Downtown Waco and don’t feel like dealing with the lines at the Silos. There is also the last remaining Ninfa’s restaurant next to The Spice Market (another really cool shopping destination). I didn’t get to try this location, but if it is like any of the other Ninfa’s then I am sure it is awesome. I wish the one in Lewisville was still there. I have such fond memories of visiting there for dinner after elementary school so long ago. Next time I go to Waco, Ninfa’s it is!

Got a belated birthday present from my sister: a puppy carrier for Karma! It is seriously the cutest thing ever and I love dancing around the house with her in tow. She likes it sometimes, but other times struggle to break free from my loving embrace. I wish she could understand just how much I need to be holding her at any given time. She is too precious for words.

I restarted Paleo and fell in love with it all over again. I kept it up for the entire time leading up to my trip to Israel. I have been falling off of the band wagon since returning, but this weekend I am going to do some SERIOUS meal planning to get back on track. I felt amazing and could immediately tell a difference in the way I felt. I’ve been on a new medication that makes me nauseous and fatigued so I’m praying that paleo can once again come to the rescue and save me from these side effects. I cannot keep falling asleep at work… #notgood

I also managed to sell my house and find a new house right before I left for Israel. Let me tell you, house stuff is always: #1 more expensive and #2. stressful than you originally think. It had been a few years since my last experience and this time I was doing this without my dad’s help so I felt the full weight of responsibility. It’s totally do-able and hopefully you pick awesome people to work with, but it can be overwhelming at times. Just being honest.

I ended up with an awesome, new (to me) house in a much better area with a shorter commute to work, closer to friends, and closer to Dallas! I am still in the middle of fixing it up/organizing (it’s been almost two months at this point… don’t judge!), but once I get everything situated then I’ll take a home tour and give you guys some more details! I am 95% finished painting and my floors are being delivered on Saturday. My mom is getting my little, back patio fixed up so that may or may not make it into the house post. We will see how well everything progresses and if it’s not ready then we will just do another house post later 🙂 Karma is loving it so far, but she has quickly ruined the carpet, hence the new hardwood floors that are on their way. In all fairness, I was already planning to get the floors even before she had her many accidents, but this just makes it more necessary to get it sooner rather than later.

I’ve managed to pack a lot into a very short amount of time. This summer is one for the books and I am so excited to tell you allllll about my wonderful, life-changing trip to Israel!

Happy Reading!

New Year – New Post

I realize that this is now officially a month late, but trust me life has been HECTIC, which equals more blog content. Christmas and New Year’s went fairly well. Some sad family issues had occurred around those times so that did put a damper on some of the festivities, but life goes on, as you all know.

In early December I had the honor of being in the house party for my friends, Becca and Kent’s wedding. I got to show people where to sit and then dance my face off. It was a little past Fort Worth so my friends and I decided to stay at the Omni Fort Worth since we don’t live super close to the wedding location. You should know by now that crazy things just seem to happen to me. My car’s key fob is broken, but it would sometimes still lock my car. I usually don’t lock it and whenever I give it to valets they apparently don’t either. I think nothing of this and get my car valeted at the Omni. When I made the room reservation and signed up for the rewards program I SWORE that it said that valet was included. I told the front desk this and they immediately comped my parking (which was a ridiculous $32 a night).  My other friends did the self-parking, which was down the street and still $28 a night. Ridiculous. Anyway, we get ready to go to the rehearsal dinner and I text the code to the valet to bring up my car. We head down and they tell us it’s going to be a minute…. 30 minutes later they tell me they can’t find my car. They then realize they know where it is, but they’ve manually locked it and now cannot get it unlocked. However, they feel really bad about this so they offer to comp the parking again, send a cheese plate to the room, and drive me and my friends around in the hotel’s super nice Lincoln Navigator. #designateddriver

The next day I head down to the valet stand early before we head to the wedding to see if I can get the car unlocked. For whatever reason my actual key cannot unlock the car either so they have to use their unlock kit to get my car open. We go to the wedding, it was beautiful, we did a mannequin challenge, and danced so much. When I get back to the hotel that night I talk to my valet and say “Are you the one parking my car?” He tells me yes and I say “DO NOT LOCK IT”. He says that he has to and I say “NOOOO I’m that girl that has been causing the problems. DO NOT LOCK IT!”. Homeboy totally locks it which I find out the next day at checkout… Guess who made sure to fill out that survey!

For NYE my friends and I went to Beats and Bubbly at the Perot Museum in Dallas.

I got my dress from Rent the Runway and LOVED it! It was long, sparkly, and totally worthy of a fancy New Year’s Eve. If you’ve never heard of Rent the Runway let me break it down: basically, you have some event that you need to attend whether it be a bridal shower, Christmas party, wedding, birthday… anything where you would normally need to go buy a dress. Instead of spending potentially hundreds of dollars for these events to have dresses you might only wear once or twice, instead you can rent an even nicer dress for a fraction of the cost! The dress I rented was designer and normally retailed for $750; I rented it for under $100! You get 20% off of your first order and if you use the code in my link above then I also get a $30 credit 🙂 #treatyoself

This was actually my second order from RTR. For my company Christmas party a few weeks prior I also ordered a similar, but shorter dress and had an awesome experience. Everyone complimented me all night and now I think I should buy that dress lol. However, it also retails for several hundred dollars so I will just rent it whenever I really need it. Some other great perks: not only do you get your size, BUT you can also have a backup size for free in case the original size doesn’t work out , if you join Pro then you get a free birthday rental (plus some other perks), there are tons of reviews on all of the dresses so you can make a really informed decision on fit and how to style the dress.

Honestly, I wish I would have started using this sooner:

  • You don’t have to get the dress dry-cleaned since it’s included in the price.
  • They send it to you in this cool, zip-up garment bag with a pre-paid return slip.
  • You can get the dress for either 4 or 8 days.
  • Just drop it all off at a UPS store by the designated date.
  • If you have any issues just message the company and they will make it right 🙂

For my dad’s Christmas present I got him a cooking class from Sur La Table in Southlake. We learned how to make several different types of dumplings: pirogies, gnocchi, and su mai (not sure how that is spelled). It was a really nice day and the only other people in our class were another father/daughter duo where she had also given him the class as his Christmas present! Our instructor was super nice and was able to accommodate us since apparently I had not actually completed the class sign up online (oops!). However, there was more than enough food and plenty to keep us all busy. Always a good experience!

Life started to get a little bit crazier after that (if you can believe it):

  • My tax return was apparently also filed by someone else pretending to be me.
  • The IRS told me I wouldn’t get my refund until APRIL (spoiler: just got it yesterday).
  • I reported my doctor to the Medical Board of Texas and will potentially be suing them.
  • I got stuck in an elevator at work for an hour… alone.
  • My phone broke two days before I was supposed to leave the country for three months.

So that’s been my past two weeks… Fortunately everything else is working out really well now (knock on wood) and I have just started my newest Ireland journey! I will be staying in Dublin for the next three months for work and am looking forward to this next adventure 🙂

Stay tuned!

Fall Activities 2016

After coming back from Ireland I was immediately thrown back into the swing of parties, weddings, and dinners. I got back a Thursday, had Friday off, went to a birthday party on Saturday, and had a wedding shower on Sunday. Never a dull moment!

My friend Blake was turning 26 and his girlfriend Kyla suggested we all go to The Deep Ellum Brewing Company to celebrate! They have this really cool deal on Saturdays: they close down the brew house and host tours. You pay $15 and get a souvenir glass and three beers of your choice. Pretty good deal and I don’t even like beer!

I had actually never been on a brewery tour so this was pretty exciting. I do prefer winery tours, but learning new things whilst drinking with your friends is usually a good time. The weather was really nice, the company ideal, and it was essentially just an enjoyable afternoon.

The next day I went to a wedding shower for my friend, Becca. Sadly, the only downside to my Europe trip was that I had to miss her Bachelorette Party 🙁 Her shower was a ton of fun. Her Maid-of-Honor and my friend Melissa’s mom makes cakes and certainly delivered for the shower! She also made her wedding cake a few weeks later and of course I devoured my piece in mere seconds (but that is for another post).

Halloween was slightly less than enthusiastic this year, but we still had fun nonetheless. I was Ginger Spice/Baby Spice and Karma was a Beer frau. Basically, we were Europe. If I had been thinking about it more then I could have been #Brexit. Tara was Sailor Moon and we went to this little block party in Denton for about five seconds before leaving to get Thai and go home.

As per tradition, my friend, Danielle, hosted Friendsgiving 2016 in her new apartment. I made Macaroni with a Beer Cheese sauce in the crockpot. Easy and delicious! There was wayyy too much food, a mannequin challenge, and free flowing wine.

Ignore the fact that the video doesn’t have Black Beetles playing. The struggle was real to just upload it.

On November 23rd I finally made one of my personal dreams come true……

I MET GOOD CHARLOTTE!!!!

Not only did I get to see them at Edgefest 2016 (RIP 102.1), but I also got to meet them IN THE FLESH because your girl shelled out for VIPPPPPP! I HAD to! I met each and every one of them, gushed a little bit, gave them thank you notes, and basically fan-girled. To make the long story very short, I was running REALLY late to their concert and thought I would miss the Meet and Greet before the show. I happened to get there just in the nick of time and was the last person to see them before the Meet and Greet was over. Did that give me the chance to leave a lasting impression? I sure as heck hope so! They liked my outfit and my cat shoes. I basically dressed exactly like I did in 8th grade and it worked out. I am now blonde and decided to add glitter roots, but other than that it was basically the same. They had 3 openers, which I considered excessive and helped solidify the reality that I am in fact too old to be in the pit for punk shows. #dontpushmebro

They finally took the stage before my stamina and bladder gave out and you know I was in the front row singing along with all of their songs, crying my little eyes out. My friends were a little drunk and FaceTimed me right when they were singing Hold On. It was perfection.

The next day was Thanksgiving. We weren’t meeting up with the fam until later so my sister and I took advantage of the gorgeous weather to take Christmas pictures with Karma. There is a little park down the street from my house. We were hoping to be able to put her in a baby swing, but this park didn’t have a swing set. It did have a baby slide so that became the next best thing. Karma’s face is priceless in these next few pictures.

Disclaimer: she wasn’t hurt in the taking of these pictures. It was a baby slide and Tara was waiting at the bottom to catch her.

Whew! That was a lot of activity for basically just one month. I’ll leave December to it’s own devices.

Sneak peak into what’s next: two weddings, a car adventure, birthday parties, company Christmas party, friends, food, Christmas, Hanukkah, and probably New Year’s Eve. It looks like it’s going to be another exciting month!

Free DryBar!

Happy New Year, Gentle Readers!

You read my title right… I was the recipient of *free* Dry Bar!

What is Dry Bar you ask and how did I get this wonderful treatment free? Well let me tell ya….

Dry Bar is a special new type of salon that only does washes and blow outs. “No cuts. No color. Just blowouts” is their motto. I’ve been going for several years now ever since they came to Dallas. My usual spot is the one conveniently placed in North Park. However, a brand new location just opened in Grapevine (fairly close to my work)!

I had tried to get a walk-in appointment at the Plano location a few weeks ago on a whim, but they couldn’t get me right away so I vowed to return again soon. Fortunately, the very next morning I awoke to an email from DryBar telling me about this new promotion ABC Family’s “Pretty Little Liars” was hosting: FREE BLOW OUTS! Of course the site crashed and the app wasn’t working to make a booking, but never fear,  as a former call center employee I am not afraid of calling the help number. After being on hold for a little bit I managed to get two appointments, one for me and one for Tara, at the Grapevine location for that Tuesday. Saving $40 and not having to do my own hair for a few days? Heck yesssss.

snapchat

The salon is right off 114 next to Jimmy John’s, Uncle Julio’s, and In-N-Out burger. It is, in my opinion, a little bit nicer and bigger than the one in NorthPark. The location in Plano is much smaller compared to this one. We got there a little bit early, which ended up working out really well. Apparently a lot of people ended up canceling their appointments so they were able to see us right away!

chandelier

My stylist was AWESOME. He is probably one of the best ones I had ever had at Dry Bar. He normally works at the Highland Park location and had some wonderful stories about all of the ultra-wealthy of Dallas. Apparently some lady who makes hair extensions frequents that location, gets drunk off of the free wine, and “makes it rain” dollar bills while she is standing on the counter. I need to witness this at some point in the near future.

dry bar style

Tara hardly ever gets her hair done for fear of the blow dryer making her hair even bigger than it normally is. The skillful hands of her Dry Bar-ista (not sure that’s a correct term, but I’m running with it) her hair looked like a cotton-candy daydream. I think she is now a believer in the Bar. See for yourself!

After we got our blow outs we treated ourselves to some yummy sushi at Sushi Sam in Southlake. My salmon sashimi was divine 🙂 The powerball was coming up for 1.4 billion and we have both never bought lottery tickets before so of course we needed to make a pit stop at the gas station. We met some interesting characters also buying tickets.

sisters

And that is the story about how I got Dry Bar for free 🙂 This is not a sponsored post and anyone who made an appointment that day also received the same treatment. I was not compensated, I just love Dry Bar.

Dallas Holiday Adventures

Hello Readers!

I know I’ve already posted about the end of the year, but I had a few more things to add before we close the book on 2015.

tara juice

My sister, Tara, is home from school. She goes to Liberty University where I also graduated from, but is transferring to TWU. She is a yoga teaching vegan who is studying to be a dietician. She is also becoming a Doula in her spare time. We enjoy exploring all that Dallas has to offer and sometimes our mom comes along for the ride.

The other day mom and I got pedicures (Tara opted out) and then decided to hit up Dallas for some tacos and thrifting.

I had to take them to one of my all-time favorite places right outside of Uptown called Velvet Taco. No matter what time of day I go it is always bustling with people. They have a wall of options and then every week they have a new taco to try. My favorites are the Tikka Masala Chicken tacos and the Fried Oyster tacos, but all of the other ones I have tried I enjoyed. If you wanna grab a side they also have these awesome potatoes, tater tots with an egg on top, or mexican street-style corn. They are famous for their Red Velvet Cake (which I have yet to try). They also have Margaritas and a nice beer selection. I highly recommend you go try them out, but be forwarned that there might be a wait. My favorite/worst time to go is right before all of the bars close (2am). Its super packed, but that is exactly when you need a taco. Since you’re in Uptown, Taco Bell or Taco Bueno is just not going to cut it. I’ve yet to try Fuel City Tacos, but I’ve heard they are also hard to beat. Those will just have to wait for a future post.

tacos

During our outing we also ventured to…..

The Gypsy Wagon: an awesome store right down the street from Velvet Taco

Dolly Python: The best oddities/vintage/antique shop in Dallas! (I’m sure there will be more posts on this)

boots

Of course I also have to mention that the moment I have been waiting for for like 10 years finally happend!!! STAR WARSSSSS!!!

12405270_10153824146991563_1215329384_o

My friends bought a group of tickets so on December 18th at 10:30pm in NorthPark Center AMC, I got to witness the newest Star Wars film to grace our presence. It was magical. I’m going to have to go see it again just to be able to appreciate the greatest that is Star Wars + Disney + JJ Abrams.

12388147_10153823706066563_554130982_n

Since this is a new year and the holidays are over I have gone back on my diet (which will be discussed in another post) so to celebrate my last meal I had to go to one of my favorite sandwich shops! I took Tara on a jaunt to IKEA and then, since we were so close to Plano, we went ahead to East Hampton Sandwich Co.  They have tons of east coast inspired yummyness. Head on over to the site and check out the menu and the locations. I got the Crab Avo Club this time, but the Lobster Roll or Fried Chicken Jack are also big winners in my book. Bring some friends and get a pitcher of the Sangria (or go alone and drink the whole thing by yourself). It’s right next to the Dry Bar so make an afternoon of it!

Go see my next post about the wonders of Dry Bar 🙂

2015 Recap

Happy New Year, Readers!

I hope your 2015 was amazing and everything you wanted it to be.

12470903_10153852327316563_242928265_o

Here is a recap of a few exciting things that happened in 2015:

  • Went to IrelandIowa, San Francisco, and Austin
  • Bridesmaid in Lauren’s wedding in May
  • Took two cooking classes
  • Saw several of my friends get engaged
  • Created new friendships, let some old ones go
  • Ran a 5k
  • Lost 30 pounds
  • Explored more of Dallas, Denton, and Ft. Worth (plus surrounding areas)
  • Started this blog!
  • Had some professional victories
  • Saw Maroon 5 in concert
  • Celebrated Galentine’s!
  • Went to a Murder Mystery Dinner
  • Celebrated many friend’s birthdays as well as my 24th birthday

There were so many highs and lows to this year, but I can definitely say I learned a TON and hopefully will be taking some new habits into 2016.

Some goals for 2016:

  • Run another 5k (and potentially a half marathon)
  • Lose 50 more pounds
  • Pay off my couch and eliminate unnecessary spending
  • Spend more time with my dog and my friends
  • Focus more on my blog and professional goals
  • Travel to Ireland and Italy, hopefully Virginia and Colorado, potentially some other places
  • Celebrate my 25th Birthday!
  • Get back into reading at least one book a month
  • Start the MBA process
  • Take better care of my skin {even though that might mean no more tanning ;(}
  • Cook more (since I got new pots and pans for Hanukkah!)

I am sure there are other things that I would like to accomplish for 2016, but honestly I think this list will cover the whole year and then some. I am already trying to figure out how to prioritize my life for these next 12 months.

Holiday Recap

I had a great Hanukkah, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve. There was so much going on in such a short time frame, so sorry for the lack of updates (because I know everyone cares so much lol). I blogged a little bit about Hanukkah already so I won’t bother your with more of that.

Christmas went well. My sister came back to town and will be here for a whole month so we’ve been hanging out. She made me these really cute little embroideries for my travel wall in my house so my best friend came over and helped me hang them along with some other house stuff. I will have to post a house tour on here in a few weeks when I FINALLY finish my Travel Wall in my living room/dining room. I’ve only lived there for almost a year and a half….. no big deal. 😉 We went to my Grandma’s house and I hung out with my little second cousin, Liesel. She is seriously the cutest/happiest baby ever. I’m in love.

12436431_10153840085691563_819183240_o

We have so many people in such a small house so my sister ended up getting the special chair in the Annexed part of the house next to an extra table.

12422052_10153839461151563_1320795914_o

We were tired of having the same food for Thanksgiving and then just a few weeks later for Christmas so we decided to add some Mexican flair since a good portion of my family is Hispanic.

12415994_10153839460956563_1196837665_o

For New Year’s Eve I was supposed to go out in Uptown with some of my friends. Unfortunately I got kinda sick the day before and it has lasted several days. So last night I ended up just going down the street to Julia’s house and playing games with her, her family, and some significant others, which was exactly what I needed. We had a really great time and I got to see some of her siblings that I don’t normally see. This morning my dad made New Year’s Day brunch since I decided to spend the night.

12469865_10153854573826563_998874530_o

Karma and I tried to get it together in time to make a Christmas card this year, but it’s going to end up being more like a New Year’s card (if I even hand them out) (probably not, let’s be honest).

We both wish all of you happiness for the New Year! Let’s make 2016 the best yet!

Weekend Warriors

Happy Weekend, Everyone!

Sorry for the long pause. I’ve just been so busy lately with life, but that also means that I have plenty to blog about!

As you can see by my title, I attended another cooking class this weekend. Instead of Central Market, this time I wanted to try out the newly opened Sur La Table (pronounced Sur La Taab) location in Southlake.

12375929_10153809228866563_564495942_o

This was in celebration of my friend Becky’s birthday. We have been friends since the middle of 8th grade when she came to my junior high. She was smart and I was weird, so clearly we were bound for life. She has a penchant for cooking just like me and we have been wanting to do one forever so this was the perfect opportunity.

12369806_10153808944776563_2115690722_o

Instead of enchiladas, this class was brunch themed. We are good little twenty-somethings so of course we love brunch and everything that goes along with it. Also, my shirt says GOAL DIGGER and is from here.

12375352_10153808970001563_673050247_o

The menu for the day:

  • Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Muffins
  • Smoked Salmon and Goat Cheese Frittata
  • Breakfast Sausage
  • Gingerbread Waffles with Carmel Bourbon sauce

Such a good lineup, right? Our class was just under two hours so we had a lot of work to get down to. We had 9 people in our class, but I think the instructor said that the class could hold 14. We had a very good group and fortunately one strong guy to grind the pork shoulder for the sausages. We all decided that we would just get our sausage pre-ground when making this recipe in the future at home. I can’t say that that is one of the attachments that I would like for my Kitchenaid.

See below for some pictures from the afternoon!

I also got invited to the Mavericks game with my friend, Jenn on Saturday night. We are also both Jewish and try to see each other at least once during Hanukkah.

This past week was one of my holiday parties for the year and I happened to also get a cocktail ring stuck on the middle finger on my left hand. I had to go to a jewelry store to get them to break it off of my finger.

My Dad and I did our usual tradition of weekend Hanukkah brunch at our favorite Jewish deli in Dallas, Deli News off Preston Road. They have the best breakfast/lunch/brunch menu. Of course since we made it early enough for breakfast we had to get some sandwiches to go for lunch since we live kinda far away.

12375633_10153810971681563_647116218_o

On Friday night I had gone over to Melissa’s house and she made Tikka Masala from scratch! Go visit her blog over at Champagne Meets Whiskey, but here is a picture of what she made (I did help with the mise en place)

I hope you enjoyed this update! I’m hoping these next few holiday weeks are lovely for everyone out there in blog world! I have the week after Christmas off and I am definitely looking forward to a little vacation. This girl needs some more sleep and puppy cuddle time.

Another fun addition: my friends DT and Andrea want to move to Dallas!! They happened to be in town last weekend so I took them around to show some houses and fun things to do in the area.

First 5K!

Happy Weekend, Readers!

I hope your holiday weekend has been filled with fun, family/friends, and food. I on the other hand have just been bumming in my house making recipe cards and doing laundry, but hey, we all celebrate in our own ways.

This past Thursday was Thanksgiving as all of you remember. It was also the day I had been waiting for all year, the 48th Annual Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot! After seeing all of the pictures of my friends and family doing this over the years I decided last Thanksgiving that this was going to be my goal for 2015. Let me remind you how much of a runner I am not before I tell you my most embarrassing public moment of the year.

In January I decided to join a Planet Fitness location since it was cheap and close to my house. I figured if I was the one paying for it then I would be more apt to go. I also determined that since I had 11 months to train, by the time Thanksgiving rolled around then I would be in tip-top shape to run those 3.1 miles.

My first day at PF was a rainy, cold Monday night. Since everyone is still into the “New Years Resolution” phase of their work outs, it could not have been busier. I find the only open treadmill in the entire building. Since I had never been there before (I enrolled online) I didn’t know where the locker rooms were or if I had to bring my own lock, etc. so I just placed my stuff next to me. The base of my treadmill was rather large so I put my huge purse on it so it would be out of people’s way, but still near me.

I had downloaded the Couch to 5k app earlier that day so I turned it on and started walking. If you’ve never used the app it basically tells you when to run and when to walk for about 30 minutes. Every week it increases the amount of time you run and decreases the amount of time you walk. You start with a five minute warm up walk and then it has you run. I think for the first day it’s something like 30 seconds of running (but don’t quote me on that).

I am 10 minutes into my first day and as I start running for the second time, unbeknownst to me, my large purse falls onto the track. I have not figured out about pacing yet so I am running 6.5 miles an hour and proceed to trip over the purse. Time basically starts to go in slow motion as my life flashes before my eyes. I manage to grab onto the bars of the treadmill and kinda catch myself with one leg, but with a track going 6.5 miles an hour, I clearly can’t stay that way for long and my leg falls out from under me. I am now being dragged by the machine and I have to make the decision to let go. I am THROWN into the treadmill behind me in this super crowded gym and I crumple to the ground. Immediately, I am hit with an incredible amount of pain in my right leg. I have several piercings and three tattoos; I’ve broken my left wrist and my tailbone before. Given this information, I was pretty sure I had broken my leg.

12299862_10153778155721563_1833297512_o

I slowly look up while I am still on the ground to see if anyone wants to help me. No one is making eye contact. Finally the girl who was on the machine next to me looks back and in a disgusted, annoyed high pitched voice asks if I am ok. “Yeah…. I’m fine,” I meagerly eek out. “Well I know first aid,” she replies then turns back to walking on her machine. No other offer of help is given, God forbid she stop her work out. I manage to collect myself and stand up. I determine that my leg is not broken, however it has definitely sustained some sort of damage. I get the rest of my belongings, which are now scattered all over the place from my fall. My jacket is wrapped up on one of the poles, my purse is laying sideways behind me. I hobble myself out of there as fast as my mangled leg will let me and just cry in my car. Fortunately, I don’t live that far away and am able to make it home fairly quickly.

After that incident I didn’t go to the gym again for a few months. I never went to the doctor since I try to avoid them as much as possible, but I sustained some nerve damage in my calf and now have two lovely large scars from the belt of the treadmill dragging against my legs. It is much better now, almost a year later, but once in awhile that knee will hurt for a bit. I have yet to try to get that footage from Planet Fitness, but I will reach out to see if I can’t get that clip to submit to something like #GymFails.

All of that to say, my running career took a bit of a break for awhile and then in September I realized that November was coming faster than I had anticipated. I was only on week 4 (of 8) when the Turkey Trot came, but I was determined to do as well as I could. My best friend, Becky, was also doing C25K and we had signed up together this past summer. My mom and sister also signed up and I realized later that actually a lot of people I knew had joined as well. Unfortunately, this is more like a “fun walk/run” than I had realized. People walk this race wearing corduroys and holding their Starbucks. It just became too much to try to pass all of the walkers after awhile (I heard there were 25,000 people there) so Becky and I just decided to walk the last part. We still managed to get quite a bit of exercise on a day that is solely dedicated to food, which to me is a major win.

12295464_10153378320073892_7479681635532801645_n

There is also an 8 mile run course for the Turkey Trot that, as you can guess, is much less crowded. That has made it to our running goals list as well as doing a smaller, more race-centric 5k in the coming months. That means I will still have some attainable fitness goals to be working towards instead of just mindlessly running for no reason. I have heard many times that you are more likely to reach a goal if you write it down.

12301637_10153378320023892_3466076104007013022_n

Even though I didn’t full out run the Turkey Trot then way I had imagined, I still set a goal and accomplished it. I finished the race, I put work into making the goal attainable in the months before the race, and I did it with people that I love. What could be better than that ? 🙂

Mexican Cooking Class

I am doing so well at blogging! Three posts in one week?? Who am I?

Anywho,

My dad’s birthday is next week and he is always super hard to buy for. I generally stick to the same few things: wine, food, cigars. It’s also hard having a birthday so close to Thanksgiving AND Christmas. However, I keep hearing about the novel idea of giving “experiences” instead of physical gifts for presents. I really like this idea so I ran with it for Marc’s birthday. He loves cooking and used to work in his dad’s pizza joint back in the day; what better gift than a cooking class? I wanted to pick something that we don’t make often, but I knew he would like. I almost chose a sushi class, but the times weren’t good so Mexican it was! We never make traditional enchiladas at home (honestly I thought I signed up for a tamale class until I got there and found out it was enchiladas).

I signed us up for one at Central Market in Southlake, Texas. Central Market, if you don’t already know, is my FAVORITE high-end grocery store. It is owned by HEB, which is another chain of grocery stores here in Texas. CM has literally everything under the sun stocked all of the time. Frog legs? Got ’em. That hard to find wine you drank that one time? They’ve got your back. It’s amazinggggg

I have been dying to take a cooking class, especially from CM for a long time and this was just the push I needed to sign us up. Marc is such a ham (I get it from him). He had made friends with the whole class by the end of the night and everyone sang him Happy Birthday. He also micro-managed the other wanna-be-chefs. He was showing people how to chop and turn off the stove aka doing the most.

Our instructors were awesome. They were super nice and knowledgeable about everything in the kitchen. They were the ones who created the recipes and they made us nice little booklets with all of our recipes and a few others to take home with us.

12281828_10153763581831563_1502021471_o

We ended up making three types of enchiladas: chicken, brisket, and shrimp. I think the brisket ended up being my favorite, but they were all delicious. Our instructors also made borracho beans and rice beforehand so we got to nibble on those with our chips and salsa too. We also got two pours of wine and I discovered a chardonnay that I liked! Usually they are too oak-y, but this one was totally different. It’s called Butternut and it is made in Napa, CA.

The class lasted about 2 hours and was very interactive. About half of our class was from a local finance firm and they were doing a team building outing so they were very talkative, but they were open to talking to more people than just their group, which made it that much more fun. I will definitely be back.

I hope I’ve inspired you all to try something new (like a cooking class) in the next few weeks!

Friendsgiving

Wooo it’s been crazy around here! Some things I can’t really talk about in this space, which is fine since I have a great support system who don’t mind hearing about the crazier aspects of my life. Just know, I’ll post some crazy stuff on here, but there is even more that you will never know about…. 🙂

Here are the things I CAN talk about:

Friendsgiving:

My lovely friend, Danielle and her boyfriend, Blake, hosted an early November Thanksgiving for the friends in Blake’s Uptown Apartment. His apartment building has this super awesome hangout space that you can reserve for functions such as these. Danielle spent all day decorating and getting everything ready for us and it was very much appreciated.

12214442_10153744805486563_1340087777_o

Everyone else brought either a side dish or a dessert (plus a bottle of wine or two) and Danielle took care of the turkey. I made Mac and Cheese, which almost didn’t happy when I forgot the noodles…. my other friend Brian came through in the clutch with some extra noodles and saved the day.

12218206_10153745125156563_1352513157_o

His wife, Melissa, made Purple Potatoes! Apparently, they have a lot of the same health benefits that Sweet Potatoes have, but taste like normal white potatoes. She added some rosemary to them and they were awesomeeeeeee.

12235441_10153745125081563_1701124509_o

Rachelle made Carmel Cupcakes and brought a Chicken (we don’t like turkey) and Blaire brought a Flourless Chocolate Cake. There were tons of other dishes, such as Melissa’s French Silk Pie with Amoretto whipped cream, alas I started drinking and stopped remembering to take pictures of these things… oops!

12236583_10153745125126563_1598437167_o

It was the most fun I had had in a long time and I was coming off of one of my roughest weeks this year so the dinner was much needed. We all just laughed and generally had an awesome time. I cannot thank Danielle enough for putting together this wonderful evening and inviting me as well.

I ended up spending the night (per usual) and then hanging out with Brian and Melissa all day. This happens probably once a month. We get brunch, I help them do random errands, and we watch movies. This time we decided to go to Henry’s Majestic near Blake’s apartment in Uptown. Brian got this awesome looking burger, Scott (Melissa’s brother and fellow party-goer) got Sausage Biscuits and Gravy, and Melissa and I both got this redone southwestern style Eggs Benedict. The restaurant also offers a Mimosa bar with lots of different types of juices and add-ins to make it your own. I wasn’t really feeling up to the task of day drinking quite yet, but I did try Melissa’s concoction and it was delicious.

12218943_10153746205216563_1226721677_o

We went back to their apartment for a much needed nap and then we did errands and watched Inside Out. By the way, if you have never seen Inside Out get ready for ALL THE FEELS. I’m surprised I didn’t cry more. Side note: I never used to cry in movies (or at all). PCOS and thyroid issues will make you an emotional wreck when you have had no prior experience with ya know, emotions.

All in all, a great weekend with great people. What could be better?
